Have you ever been part of a great team, where you used to look forward to going to work? Or have you ever been part of a team that made you dread going to work? How does that make you feel? Being a leader of a team poses a higher level of responsibility, however, every one of us plays an important role in building a high-performance team, and that is what every leader needs to work towards.
4 tips on building a high-performance team
1. Inspire your team daily
Zig Ziglar once said that “Motivation is like taking a bath”. It doesn’t last and that is why it is recommended daily. People are motivated when they are working towards objectives that make sense to them; when they feel a sense of purpose and meaning. Be aware of what your people want to achieve and try to align the company objectives with their personal objectives.
2. Be competent and have concern
Being a leader means that we need to continue developing our competencies through constant learning, be it formal or informal. This is part of the formula for continuous growth. Aligned with this is the concern for our people. Constant bragging about how busy we are and not have time to meet and discuss with our people is a formula for destruction. You cannot have one without the other
3. Have a vision and communicate it
If people do not know where they are going, they lose themselves in the process. When your team members understand how their work impacts the overall output, they usually find their job to be a lot more meaningful. When your employees are satisfied, they are usually more productive and have wider scope in contributing towards the bigger picture.
4. Encourage healthy conflict
When people do not engage in conflict, they will probably engage in back-channel politics or become demotivated out of being submissive. Encourage healthy conflict by providing a platform for open communication and create guidelines around giving and receiving good feedback.
The mindset of a leader is critical in developing a high-performance team. Do not be the leader who stands there in power simply because of your high technical abilities. Your people deserve to be part of such a team.
