A good, productive and communicative working relationship with the boss should enable the development of skills, knowledge and career. Mismanaging this relationship can create a manipulative relationship where office politics or personal style dominate and can lead to feelings that the protagonists are on opposing sides, or at least not on the same team. Managing Up enables participants to know what is possible and feasible, en route to achieving the results that matter. This programme exposes participants to powerful tools for effectively managing the relationship with their boss. Participants will discover techniques on how to construct a relationship of mutual trust, communicate properly, and identify any blockages to the relationship.

Structure of Programme


Part 1: Introduction to Managing Up  

  • Overview of the concept, why it matters, and the risks of mismanagement.  

Part 2: Understanding Your Manager  

  • Explore different management styles and behaviours.  
  • Learn how to assess your boss's priorities, pressures, and communication preferences.  

Part 3: Building a Foundation of Trust  

  • Learn the elements of trust and mutual respect in the manager-employee relationship.   
  • Role-play scenarios on building credibility and reliability.  

Part 4: Effective Upward Communication  

  • Techniques to communicate assertively and strategically: setting expectations, giving feedback upward, and clarifying priorities.  

Part 5: Unblocking the Relationship  

  • Identify common blockages in upward relationships (e.g., mismatched styles, unclear expectations, past conflicts) and strategies to address them constructively.  

Part 6: Action Planning & Close  

  • Participants create personal action plans for managing up in their context.  

Group debrief and Q&A.
