What Is Emotional Intelligence

What Is Emotional Intelligence

Welcome to this course on emotional intelligence at work. Let me start with a situation you might recognise. You are working the busy lunchtime shift at a restaurant in Sliema. A customer complains loudly about their order. Your first instinct might be to get defensive or frustrated. But instead, you take a breath, stay calm, and handle it professionally. That right there is emotional intelligence in action.

Emotional intelligence is about understanding emotions, both your own and other people's, and using that understanding to guide how you behave. It is not about being soft or avoiding difficult situations. It is actually about being more effective at work.

Think of it as having four main parts. First, knowing what you are feeling and why. Second, managing those feelings so they help rather than hinder you. Third, recognising what others are feeling. And fourth, using all of this to build better relationships.

Let me give you a local example. Imagine you work in a busy office in Valletta and your colleague snaps at you over something small. Someone with low emotional intelligence might snap back immediately. Someone with higher emotional intelligence pauses, recognises their colleague might be stressed about a deadline, and responds calmly. They might even ask if everything is alright. That simple shift changes the entire interaction.

Emotional intelligence is not something you either have or do not have. It is a set of skills you can develop with practice. Over this course, we will look at practical ways to strengthen these skills in your everyday work.
